From Traditional To Innovative: The Evolution Of Soft Packaging In The Wine And Spirits Industry! | Donglin Packaging

The idea of using soft packaging for wine and spirits is gaining increasing attention, and for good reason. The ability to reduce costs, improve sustainability, and create eye-catching ready-made designs are just three reasons to move away from rigid packaging.

“Consumers have changed their views on sustainable packaging, forcing the entire value chain to act faster,” notes soft packaging systems supplier Fres-co System USA. “Lightweight packaging requires less energy for production and transportation, emits fewer greenhouse gases during production, and has a more efficient product-to-package ratio, all contributing to a reduced carbon footprint.”

For some time, bag-in-box has been a popular choice for wine packaging, offering the advantage of requiring fewer material purchases (just the bag and cardboard versus bottles, labels, cardboard, and caps compared to bottled wine). However, other wine packaging options are emerging.

Flat packaging bottles are made from 100% recycled PET plastic and are entirely recyclable. Additionally, heavier and larger glass wine bottles require more fuel for transportation, resulting in a larger carbon footprint. Plastic bottles for flat packaging eliminate concerns about glass breakage during transport.

Meanwhile, High Key Wine Co. wants people to know that “boxed wine is cool now,” as boldly stated on their website. Their products include 187ml pouches of sweet white wine, dry rosé, and sweet rosé.

The company touts wine pouches as a lightweight option that allows hikers to carry them in their backpacks. These small pouches also offer a solution for drinking wine in places like the poolside, under umbrellas, or on boats where glassware might be restricted. They are also ideal for concerts, festivals, and sporting events.

The flexibility of the film material means that consumers can fit more beverages in the refrigerator. Single-serve spouted pouches are a customer favorite for on-the-go use—traveling, picnicking, boating, hiking, barbecues, and more recreational activities. Custom spouted pouches are particularly well-suited for promotions, with today’s soft packaging pouches featuring multi-layer flexible barrier films and printing before being made into finished packaged products. Branding is crucial in the alcoholic beverage market. Potential customers take about three seconds to decide whether to choose your brand or turn to your competitors.
